When to Visit Notre-Dame Cathedral
Notre-Dame was the most visited monument in Europe before the 2019 fire, welcoming approximately 14 million visitors per year. With the timed-reservation system introduced at the 2024 reopening, crowds are better managed, but planning ahead is still important.
Best Times of Day
Early morning (8:00-9:30 AM) is the quietest time to visit. The light through the rose windows is beautiful in the morning. Late afternoon (after 5:00 PM) is also less crowded as tour groups have typically departed. Midday (11:00 AM - 3:00 PM) is the busiest period.
Best Days of the Week
Weekdays (Tuesday through Thursday) are generally less crowded than weekends. Monday can also be quiet. Avoid Saturday and Sunday if possible, as both tourists and local worshippers fill the cathedral.
Best Seasons
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer the ideal balance of pleasant weather and manageable crowds. Summer (June-August) is the busiest period with long queues even with timed reservations. Winter (November-March) is the quietest season, though the cathedral may have shorter hours.
Special Periods
Christmas and Easter services are particularly special but draw very large crowds. The cathedral is magnificently decorated during Advent. If you wish to attend a service, arrive well in advance. The timed-reservation system helps manage visitor flow during these peak periods.
